FDA on Use of the Word "Natural"

The FDA is asking for your opinion on food labeling!—specifically for the use of the word “natural.”  Currently, the word “natural” is 100% marketing hype and nothing else, since it is not regulated.  In the immortal words of my former doctor, “Dog poop is natural, but I wouldn’t recommend eating it.”  My personal favorite is “natural vanilla flavor,” which in some cases is made in part from a gland near a certain part of a beaver.

Seriously, though, they are mainly concerned with:

1.       Defining the word “natural” in food labeling, or possibly prohibiting its use.

2.       Determining “whether food products containing ingredients produced using genetic engineering or foods containing high fructose corn syrup may be labeled as ‘natural’.”
